About The Show

The Unstarving Musician features interviews with independent artists and creative professionals who share the business systems behind their work — covering revenue, audience building, touring, sync licensing, marketing, the creative process, and more. While the show is rooted in music, it now includes guests from across creative disciplines (authors, photographers, visual artists, filmmakers) because the business principles around building a sustainable creative career transfer across fields.

The goal is to help independent creators better understand the marketing, business, and creative processes that empower us to do more of what we love.

The Interview Format

The Unstarving Musician features 45–60 minute conversational interviews. You and I will attempt to give listeners a glimpse into your world while drawing out stories, systems, and lessons they can apply to their own work. My role is to help you articulate the methodology behind what you do — you don’t need to arrive with everything pre-packaged.

What Makes a Strong Guest

Strong guests are prepared to:

  • Share both successes and challenges from real experience
  • Speak to the specifics of how they do what they do — not just general philosophy
  • Balance mentioning current projects with substantive value for listeners
  • Promote the episode to their audience after release

The show isn’t a promotional platform. Guests with new releases, current books, courses, platforms, or products are welcome — many of my guests have them — but the conversation centers on what listeners can take away, not on featuring the product itself.

What Helps Me Create Quality Episodes

  • A solid website
  • One or two high-resolution photos of yourself (min. 600 × 600 pixels)
  • An active social media presence and email list
  • Willingness to share the episode with your audience

Production Timeline

I’m fortunate to have a healthy backlog of booked and prerecorded interviews. The production queue is currently 3–6 weeks from recording to publication.

Before You Apply

A few questions worth sitting with before you fill out the form:

Your Experience:

  • What’s something you’ve figured out the hard way that other independent creators could learn from?
  • What approaches have surprised you with their effectiveness — or lack of it?
  • What does conventional wisdom get wrong, in your experience?

Conversation Readiness:

  • Are you comfortable discussing both what’s working AND what isn’t?
  • Can you share specific examples and stories rather than general advice?
  • Do you have 45–60 minutes to go deep?

Ready to Apply?

If you’re feeling good about a guest spot after reading this, please complete the Guest Match Form. The form is short — a few minutes. Detailed responses help, but a thin application from someone with real experience is better than no application at all.
